One big advantage of small bathrooms is that the cost to remodel them is often quite affordable.
The smaller the space you work with, the less money you have to spend on materials and possibly labor. Plus, just a few accessories can make a big impact in a small space.
If you’re inspired and ready to renovate your small bathroom without taking out a second mortgage, this is where you can start.

Update your wall and bathroom tiles
Wall tiles are a cosmetic change that makes a big impact. If you have expensive tastes, you may find yourself drawn to a tile that’s a little out of your budget. Before you splurge, Green recommends exploring ways to make more affordable materials, like subway tiles, look more upscale.
For example, you can arrange in a fishbone pattern or find a shape with unique features.
“Subway tiles come in a variety of colors and finishes, so you can still create a unique look for your space,” she says.
Design Tips
Another benefit of using a cheaper material like wall tiles is that you can install it all the way up to the ceiling, making the entire room appear larger.

Install large format tiles for floors
Besides wall treatment, flooring is the next most effective upgrade solution for you.
Installing new flooring always takes a big chunk out of a renovation budget, but Green notes that opting for large-format tiles instead of mosaics can save you money, especially on labor, since they’re often quicker to install.
“There are tons of large format tile options, and choosing a tile that looks like marble or stone can add a luxurious feel to your bathroom,” she says.
Add a fresh coat of paint
Painting your small bathroom doesn’t require a lot of paint and is a DIY job that you can often complete in just a week.
To make a cramped bathroom feel more spacious, bright, and airy, Green suggests choosing a lighter color scheme like a pale blue or neutral. Just make sure you choose a durable paint that can withstand moisture.
And walls aren’t the only surfaces you can paint.
“Instead of replacing all your cabinets, consider painting them,” says Green. “A fresh coat of paint in a modern color can completely change the look of your bathroom.”
Enhanced lighting
Bathroom lighting should be functional and contribute to the overall atmosphere.
When you’re getting ready for the day or just refreshing yourself, you need enough light to see. But as you wind down for the day, you may find yourself wanting dimmer lighting.
For this reason, adding a dimmer to your lights is a small, inexpensive change that can have a big impact.
If you want to go even further, Green says replacing old light fixtures with new ones or installing wall sconces can make your bathroom look like new.
Harness the power of mirrors
If your small bathroom currently has a small mirror, this is a great opportunity to upgrade.
Installing a larger mirror will instantly make a space feel larger and more spacious. While you’re at it, look for a mirror with a unique shape or frame to add some personality to the space.
Green also likes to use mirrors in creative ways in bathroom design. For example, she suggests playing with the idea of installing a mirrored gallery wall.
Don’t forget the details
Small details can take a bathroom from a builder’s look to a custom or, dare we say, luxurious one. Installing moldings, upgrading cabinet handles, hanging a new shower curtain, and investing in a new set of towels all go a long way.
While you can splurge on a few items, Green also recommends shopping for vintage decor at thrift stores.
