We all know how difficult it can be to maintain a lush garden and yard during the hot summer months. But of course, there are some exceptions that bloom in the sun and continue to thrive throughout the fall and winter months.
Read on to find out which plants to plant that will last until December.
pansy
Pansies are beautiful flowers that you can usually plant in late summer or early fall. They tend to like part sun and part shade, and don’t like too much heat.
This is why they are the perfect flower to plant if you want a flower-filled yard in the winter. These beautiful flowers bloom in temperatures between 40°F and 60°F and will add a splash of color to your garden.

Dahlia flowers
Dahlias are another flower that can bloom through December. These beautiful flowers are native to Mexico and South America, but surprisingly they bloom throughout the fall months! As long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 35°F, they will thrive.
Chrysanthemum
Marigolds are very hardy flowers and can withstand a wide range of climates and temperatures. They come in a variety of beautiful colors, including vibrant blues and pale pinks. The beauty of planting marigolds in late summer is that they can last into the late fall months.
Remember that they need well-drained soil to continue growing and do not like soil that is too wet.
Kale flowering
Flowering kale may seem like an unlikely plant to decorate your home with during the winter, but its bright purple and pink tones will make even your neighbors stop and take a look at your yard.
Flowering kale is easily tolerant of frost and low temperatures and will bloom when temperatures drop in late fall.
Black-eyed Susan
Black Eyed Susans are the color of sunshine, which is ironic because they love cold temperatures. These beautiful yellow flowers will even thrive in temperatures as low as -30°F and will turn your winter garden into a summer oasis.
Even when they die back, they continue to grow back year after year, making this one of the easiest flowers to care for.
Coneflower
Coneflowers come in a variety of colors including pink, purple, white, yellow, and red. These small but sturdy flowers bloom in the fall and cooler months and also like well-drained soil. Coneflowers are also loved by bees, butterflies, and many others!
catnip
Catmint is a lovely purple plant that resembles lavender (and smells just as good). It is extremely hardy and the flowers require little care in the winter.
They often grow very well in pots even in the colder months and will change from bright purple in summer and fall to lovely pale purple and grey tones in winter.
