Hello GPODers and welcome to GPOD After Dark!
In case you missed it yesterday (you should definitely go back and check it out here), we visited Terry Redling’s New Jersey garden which was filled with flowers, including a variety of lilies and zinnias.
Hi, my name is Terry Redling and I live in Gillette, NJ, a semi-rural suburb about 28 miles from New York City. Previously living in a 6b zone, we now have a 7a garden. I am a geriatrician by day (and on call at night) and enjoy the meditation and beauty of the garden to relieve stress and recharge. I love all types of lilies (including Money treeor commonly known as the lily). Deer are a big problem, but the screen is virtually invisible and keeps deer from getting near the flowers. My husband Jeff and I love spending time outside tending to our property and vegetable garden, which he has built into a 2-story structure over the years. We love sitting by the fire pit or relaxing in the hot tub surrounded by all this beauty.
Today we return to Terry’s garden and see how the space transforms as the sun sets.
A feast of lilies and tuberoses in all colors and shapes! And even though the lighting was dimmer, the petals were absolutely gorgeous.
Another amazing lily variety, ‘Salmon Star’ (Lily ‘Salmon Star’ (Zones 4–9) has many similarities to the ‘Zeba’ and ‘Big Smile’ varieties we looked at yesterday, but is more peachy in color.
If you want your outdoor space to be more magical at night, some well-placed lights are all you need. Scattered throughout this lily border, they add a whole new dimension to the space. There are also plenty of solar-powered options on the market today that allow you to add lighting without having to run wires or increase your electric bill.
Terry mentioned in her introduction that she likes lilies like real lilies, and this variety is the sweetest of the lily varieties. The ‘Strawberry Candy’ lily (Hemerocallis ‘Strawberry Candy’, Zones 3–9) can easily be paired with softer colours while adding a brighter pop, but also offers great texture with its ruffled edges.
Another view of the beautiful lily and tuberose beds, perfectly placed next to the porch, where you can sit and enjoy the view and scents for as long as you like—a sunset doesn’t detract from the splendor of this garden.
And all right next to the hot tub?? I find Terry’s medical career all the more impressive because I’m not sure I could ever leave this garden oasis.
Of course, it’s not all lilies and lilies in the garden. Terry has some other gorgeous flowers, too, like this large-leafed hydrangea in many shades of blue and purple.
Thanks Terry for sharing your beautiful garden with us! It’s great to see you find ways to make the most of your space and make it enjoyable day and night.
Are you a night owl in your garden? I would love to see some more gardens designed and decorated to enjoy at night!
